As many of us know, traveling on business doesn’t always mean luxurious accommodations and exotic destinations.

Many of us have to do it–well–on the cheap.   Still, if you have a long way to go on your next business trip, don’t think you can only get comfort and a good night’s sleep in first class.  Now there’s an airline that’s offering economy class beds–that’s right–beds–to their passengers.

Air New Zealand is offering what is calls “Skycouch,” literally three economy seats that unfold and create one big space that can be used for children to play, or anyone to stretch out and go to sleep.  The three seats that comprise the Skycouch will cost the same as two and a half actual seats.

The concept was developed by Air New Zealand’s designers and engineers, and represents a real breakthrough in economy class improvements for air travelers.

According to the airline, about 1/4 of its long haul economy class seats will convert to Skycouches in the airline’s new Boeing 777-300 airplanes.

How often the seats will be used for this purpose and at this cost remains to be seen.  The seats–or Skycouches–will run about $5,420 U.S. dollars.  But what would be really great would be for this innovation for economy class to catch fire and spark even more ideas that make flying on the cheap just that much more enjoyable.
