New Airport Screening Policy: Will it Be as Successful?

Posted on 03. Apr, 2010 by Kat Schneider Fotheringham in Blog, Business Travel, Uncategorized, corporate housing, executive accommodations, international business travel

With President Obama’s  new order in place this week, calling for a broader screening of passengers flying into our nation’s airports, we wanted to take your “temperature” on the topic and see where the readers of  The Corporate Housing Network blog stand.

The president’s order replaces an earlier order that required extra airport screening of passengers from 14 terrorism-prone countries, and replaces it with a system that will screen all U.S. bound passengers.  The new policy will treat all passengers the same way, regardless of nationality.

Now for those of us who travel for business and make a living traveling, this is big news.  I’m not sure whether I feel more or less comfortable, in reality.  On the one hand, I often wondered if we missed some threats based on examining individuals from specific countries more closely.  On the other, I feel as though with our resources as a nation, it might be a mistake to cast such a wide net and hope to catch any real threat.

I fear this new policy could exhaust our security personnel and resources, cost taxpayers a lot of money, and not be as focused as necessary to protect our people.

So what do you think?  Whether you travel for business, or you’re getting ready to take the kids to Disney World next week on break, we’d love to hear your thoughts.  Please send your comments along and let us know what you think the challenges, pros and cons are of this new and we hope successful airport security screening policy.

With the new rules in place, I am even more scared to fly than ever. Americans are leaving ourselves open to another tragedy in to near future because Muslim extremists are just as likely to be selected to be searched as you, your child or your grandmother. Politically correct programs never work while at war.

The new policy isn’t perfect, to be sure. But let’s all hope it is successful!

It’s definitely a calculated risk regardless of how it is managed. The program will only be as good as the level of care and attention that is administered to it.
