Results of TripAdvisor’s Survey on Beach and Pool Etiquette

Yes, most of the time we are all about business here.  But sometimes, we just like to stir up the conversation.  Here’s a topic I think merits some chit chat in these hot summer months.

If you travel on business  like I do, chances are that during the hot, humid days of July and August you like to take a dip in the pool or take a leisurely walk along the beach at the end of a meeting- and tension-filled day.  Most of the time I do stay in corporate housing, but even then I have been known to venture out towards a local beach if there is one nearby.

That’s why when I read through the results of TripAdvisor’s 2010 Beach and Pool Etiquette Survey, I had to smile.  The responses weren’t terribly shocking, but they did reaffirm my faith in humanity and good taste.

Take a look at some of the results:

Most Common Beach and Pool Etiquette Violations

  • Blasting loud music – 22%
  • Beach chair hogging – 18%
  • Urinating in the water – 14%

Most Annoying Beach or Pool Etiquette Violations

  • Blasting loud music – 26%
  • Urinating in the water – 15%
  • Beach chair hogging – 14%

Surprising to me, TripAdvisor notes that smoking ranked as the second-biggest pet peeve in 2009, but it somehow dropped off this year’s list of top annoyances.  I found that one hard to believe, still do.  Thankfully, even though it dropped a bit as a concern, 83 percent believe smoking should be banned around the pool, while 64 percent maintain that it should be disallowed at the beach.

Skimpy Swimwear

  • 35% think it’s a violation of beach and pool etiquette for men to wear speedos, while 29% think the same of women clad in skimpy bikinis.
  • 34% say speedos should not be worn at any age, while 9% maintain they’re a no-go only for men over the age of 40.
  • 13% believe bikinis should not be worn by women over the age of 40, while 10% think they’re inappropriate at any age.
  • 75% think it’s acceptable for women to go topless at the beach or pool in countries where it’s culturally the norm.
  • 18% think it’s unacceptable for women to go topless at the beach or pool in any destination.

I certainly don’t take part in a lot of the above while I am away on business, not even on the hottest summer days.  I keep it covered as a rule, and appreciate it when others do, too.  If I even have the time to hit the beach, I go just to enjoy the sand and the water.  I really don’t need to see the rest of  it.  Ick.
