Strong business travel boosted international air travel for the first time in a while in June,  the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said this week.

According to the IATA, the number of international air travelers flying in so-called “premium” seats rose 16.6 percent in June.  The number of international air travelers flying coach rose 9.5 percent. According to the IATA, business travelers have been buying both classes of seats.

Revenue on premium seats rose 40 percent in June compared to June 2009. Premium traffic within Europe rose 24.2 percent in June, and 6.6 percent across the North Atlantic. Premium traffic was also up 28.4 percent within the Far East.

Unfortunately, premium traffic fell 10.9 percent within North America, not surprising based on numbers released by the National  Business Travel Association (NBTA) just a couple of weeks ago, and the numbers holding steady within the U.S. economy.

Looks like we have a ways to go here in the U.S., and for corporate housing professionals, the continued suppression of business travel will continue to challenge us all to find news ways to build revenue, attract customers and ultimately, grow.
